ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – National cancer prevention advocates took to the state Monday to celebrate the work of a local organization.

Comadre a Comadre program connects cancer survivors to support their screening, diagnosis and treatment while incorporating a focus on Latina heritage and culture. Comedor received a $25,000 grant from the Prevent Cancer Foundation last year to continue that work.

The foundation said Kamdar is a “shining example” of its community grant program. “It uses the community, it builds trust in the community, it uses patient navigators, peer navigators, peer educators to really raise awareness about cancer prevention and early detection,” said Lisa McGovern, executive director of the Congressional Family Program.

Comadre was founded by six Latina cancer survivors and their families.
