GRANT COUNTY, NM (KRQE) – On March 10, a 5-year-old girl was found dead in a Grant County home west of Silver City. Few details have been released as the investigation continues and no one has yet been charged in the child’s death.

The Grant County Sheriff’s Department said they responded to a report of an unresponsive child at a home on Quail Run Road just after 11 a.m. Sunday, March 10. When deputies arrived at the scene, they performed chest compressions on the girl, but she could not be revived.

The cause of the 5-year-old’s death has not been released, and the sheriff’s department said the medical investigator’s office is still working to complete its report on the case.

A 7-year-old child was also present at the scene on March 10 and was taken to Gila Regional Medical Center “for various medical concerns,” the sheriff’s office said. As of Monday, March 25, the sheriff’s department said the 7-year-old is “in good care and healthy.” KRQE News 13 reached out to the Department of Children, Youth and Families (CYFD) for an update on the child’s placement and has not heard back.

Detectives from the Grant County Sheriff’s Department, CYFD, and “other state agencies” are investigating the case, according to the sheriff’s department, and have not released any further information so as not to compromise the investigation.

The Grant County Sheriff’s Department released the following statement regarding the case:

“This profound tragedy is being handled with the utmost care and integrity. The Grant County Sheriff’s Office appreciates your patience and understanding in this matter.”
