ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQY) – Habtom Samuel arrived at UNM as a freshman, stepped on the gas and never looked back. The highly decorated freshman added to his resume Wednesday by being named the Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Male Athlete of the Year.
Samuel dominated the field this season by winning the 5,000m and 3,000m titles. He also had a strong showing at the national level, finishing fourth in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA Championships. His time of 13:30.07 was the fastest time by a freshman in this year’s event. Samuel is the first Lobo to earn post-conference honors since 2015 and the seventh overall.
