WASHINGTON (NEXTSTAR) – President Joe Biden said search and rescue efforts continue to be a top priority after a cargo ship struck and collapsed the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore Tuesday morning.

“Everything so far indicates that it was a terrible accident. At this time, we have no other indication, no other reason to believe there was any intentional act,” Biden said.

During brief remarks from the White House on Tuesday afternoon, President Biden said he had spoken with the governor of Maryland and pledged to send all federal resources needed to respond to the emergency.

“Together we will rebuild that port,” Biden said. Shipping at the Port of Baltimore, one of the nation’s largest shipping hubs, has been suspended until further notice.

“We need to clear that channel before we can resume shipping,” Biden added.

Rescuers said they have pulled out two but the remaining six are still missing. The ship’s crew issued a mayday call shortly before the collision, allowing authorities to restrict traffic on the bridge. Biden praised the quick response that he said, “undoubtedly saved lives.”

“Our prayers go out to everyone involved in this terrible accident and to all the families, especially those who are waiting for news of their loved ones right now,” Biden said.

The president emphasized his commitment to visit Baltimore as soon as possible but did not provide a possible date.
